Chapter 26: Deals and Promises

Every student was allowed an essence potion before being sent on their way. Most drank it then and there. Daniel noted than only he and Dain had held back to save it for cycling practice later. Caspian told Daniel to go on ahead and stayed behind to speak with Brant.

After bathing and getting changed, Daniel roamed the hallways looking for the painting of the man with three Persian cats perched on his lap. That was the one that told him he was close to the hallway with Ernie in it.

Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a girl with long brown hair enter one of the rooms. She wasn’t dressed like Conrad staff and nobody had said anything about Caspian still having a mother. It made him curious, and so he followed. Right outside the door was a painting of a lady who wore two monocles, which meant that this was the Conrad library.

Daniel quietly slipped inside. The girl moved around the library, oblivious to his presence. She was grabbing certain books off of shelves and packing them away in boxes. This time, she wore a green gambeson with trousers and boots. Which made sense, since climbing some of those rickety ladders in a dress seemed like it would have been a nightmare.

“Spying on me again?” Abigail asked.

“Again? When was the first time?”

“Ohhh, so this is the girl,” said Melos.

Daniel mentally grabbed the tether and retracted the essence he was feeding it. Melos instantly vanished to wherever it was when he ran out of essence. The demon had forgotten that his presence was optional and while he’d been helpful, there were just some occasions where Daniel wished for privacy.

Abigail gave him a disappointed look. “I know it was you. Clarence saw you smash one of the windows. What did you steal?”

Alarmed, he said, “nothing. I swear. I was only trying to learn more about a particular topic, and then your bodyguard started throwing knives at me. I panicked by jumping out of the window and running for my life.”

She eyed him suspiciously. “You know, if he wanted to, he could have hit you?”

Daniel nodded. “I figured that out after the fact. I’m sorry about the window. I’ll pay for the repairs.”

“You’ll pay five hundred gold pieces to bring the stained-glass artist back from Rhoshan to recreate one of his masterpieces?”

Daniel’s mouth went dry. He knew the window looked fancy, but he didn’t think it was worth more than most houses. Perhaps he could borrow from Caspian, but then how would he repay him? Plus, would Caspian even have that much to spare? He’s not exactly Mr. Popular around here. The city might have banks, but he found it improbable that they would loan money to someone with no background or history.

Daniel hadn’t said anything for over a minute. He’d just been silently staring at her, wide-eyed, while the gears in his head turned.

Abigail laughed. “I’m only messing with you. Kids from the church painted it as practice.
